The Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu stated this in a statement on Monday in Abuja. Nwachukwu said the attention of the military high command had been drawn to a statement suggesting that current political leadership should hand over power to the military for the purpose of restructuring. He said that the statement was purported to have been made by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Robert Clark.

The Police in Kwara have arrested a 24-year-old man, Kehinde Moses, with a bag allegedly containing a freshly severed human head and hand along Ajase-Ipo road during stop and search duty. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mohammed Bagega, made the disclosure in a statement in Ilorin on Monday. Bagega said that the suspect was arrested by a team of ‘Operation Harmony’ in a commercial bus and in the process of searching the bag, one man took to his heels while Moses held.

In the  circular  issued by Ahmed Umar, a director in the CBN’s Currency Operations Department, the central bank says it will sanction institutions that “refuse to accept old series/lower denominations U.S. dollar bills from their customers.” Furthermore, the CBN warned against the same institutions to cease the practice of defacing/stamping USD notes as these “always fail authentication tests during processing or sorting.” In the meantime, Nigeria is not the only inflation hit African country to face this predicament. In Zimbabwe, which has similarly seen the value of its currency plunge in the past few years, rejection of old or torn U.S. dollars continues to be a problem. At one point, the U.S. Embassy in Harare was forced to issue a statement reassuring Zimbabweans that all U.S. notes remain legal tender regardless of when they were issued.

Femi Adesina , the President’s spokesperson , in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, said Mr Buhari’s reassurance was contained in a message to mark this year’s World Press Freedom Day. The statement quoted Mr Buhari as describing freedom of the press as “an irreducible minimum in a democracy that will flourish”, adding, however, that the freedom must be used responsibly.
