INEC said it had watched with utmost dismay and profound concern the recurrent acrimony, violence and destruction of property, including the commission’s property, which had characterized some recent political party congresses across the country. National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Barr. Festus Okoye in a statement issued in Abuja yesterday, noted that the level of violence was making it very difficult for the commission to exercise its statutory oversight responsibility. He said: “This is the season of political party congresses and conventions to elect their leaders at various levels of party organization and INEC is mandated by law to monitor them. These meetings constitute a very important aspect of the electoral process and democracy generally in Nigeria.

Sen. Michael Bamidele, Chairman Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters said this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja. Bamidele was reacting to the ongoing strike by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN). The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that JUSUN began a nationwide indefinite strike on Monday, April 6 over the non-implementation of judicial financial autonomy as enshrined in the Constitution. President Muhammadu Buhari had signed an Executive Order granting financial autonomy to the judiciary and State House of Assembly in May 2020, after several agitations.

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari yesterday evening returned to Abuja after a medical check-up in the United Kingdom. The presidential aircraft conveying the president and some presidential aides landed at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja at about 4.45 p.m. President Buhari had on March 30 departed Abuja for London, United Kingdom, for a routine medical check-up.
