What are the Causes for Back Pain? - ISA ADISA

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical help or miss work. Back pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide.

Fortunately, measures can help prevent or relieve most back pain episodes, especially for people younger than age 60. If prevention fails, simple home treatment and using the body correctly often will heal the back within a few weeks. Surgery is rarely needed to treat back pain.

When to visit a physician With at-home therapy and self-care, the majority of back pain often gets better over time, usually in a few weeks. In the event that you get back discomfort that:

  •  endures for more than a few weeks.
  •  is terrible and does not get better when you relax.
  • extends down one or both legs, particularly if the soreness is subchondral.
  • causes one or both legs to become weak, numb, or tingly.
  •  is combined with an inexplicable loss of weight.
Prevention
Improving one's physical condition and learning and practicing how to use the body might help prevent back pain.

To keep the back healthy and strong:

1- Exercise. Regular low-impact aerobic activities — those that don't strain or jolt the back — can increase strength and endurance in the back and allow the muscles to work better.

2- Increase the flexibility and strength of your muscles. Exercises for the back and abdomen muscles, which develop the core, assist to prepare these muscles so that they cooperate to support the back. Sustain a healthy weight. Back muscles are strained by obesity. 

3- Give up smoking. Back pain in the lower back is more common in smokers. Given that the risk rises with daily cigarette consumption, quitting should help lower the risk.

Avoid movements that twist or strain the back. To use the body properly:

- Stand smart. Don't slouch. Maintain a neutral pelvic position. When standing for long periods, place one foot on a low footstool to take some of the load off the lower back. Alternate feet. Good posture can reduce the stress on back muscles.
- Sit smart. Choose a seat with good lower back support, armrests and a swivel base.
